10 Reasons to Elope in Ouray, Colorado

Where to elope in Colorado

Finding the perfect elopement destination feels like a huge feat, especially when there are so many breathtaking locations to consider. Known as the “Switzerland of America”, Ouray, Colorado is a mountain town tucked deep in the San Juan Mountains. While you’re probably the most familiar with the Rocky Mountains, don’t sleep on the San Juans! With dramatic peaks, alpine lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs, it’s one of Colorado’s most breathtaking places to say “I do.” If you’re considering an adventurous wedding day in a unique location, here are 10 reasons why eloping in Ouray, Colorado might be the perfect choice.

Reasons to Elope in Ouray, Colorado

Before we get into it, allow us to introduce ourselves! We are Chuck & Shiloh, a Colorado elopement photography and videography duo. Originally, we are from the Midwest, but relocated to Colorado Springs a couple years ago. Since then, we have had the honor of documenting love stories all throughout Colorado (and have loved every single second). Despite having traveled all over Colorado, the San Juan Mountains have a special place in our hearts.

1. Jaw-Dropping Mountain Scenery

Everywhere you look in Ouray, you’re surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. From rugged cliffs to sweeping valleys, the San Juan Mountains create a cinematic backdrop that feels larger than life.

One of the most captivating parts of visiting Ouray, Colorado is how close everything is to town. You don’t have to travel far to discover magical views. But if you are looking for something a little more “off the beaten path”, here’s a round-up of some locations to check out for jaw-dropping mountain views:

  • Dexter Creek

  • Cutler Creek Trail

  • Wilson Creek Trail

  • Full Moon Gulch Trail

  • Perimeter Trail

  • Bridge of Heaven Trail

  • Dallas Corbett Loop

Each of the above trails varies in difficulty, so be sure to chat with your elopement photographer (👋🏼 we gotchu covered) ahead of time about what you are envisioning for your big day.

2. Endless Adventure Opportunities

Hiking, off-roading, ice climbing, or soaking in hot springs—Ouray is an adventure hub (much like the rest of Colorado). You can easily combine your elopement with activities you both love, making your day feel unforgettable and unique. Because Colorado is such a hotspot for year-round fun, you can count on there being something to do in every season.

But what most people don’t anticipate when visiting Ouray is just how rich it is in history. If you and your honey are seeking a truly unique experience, you’re in for exactly that in Ouray. The town was established by gold and silver miners in the late 1870s/early 1880s. You are still able to explore nearby ghost towns that were established during the mining rush. Visit Animas Forks or Red Mountain Town to get a glimpse at weathered cabins, abandoned mine structures, and scenic views.

Whether you and your honey lean more towards the adrenaline-seeking side, are big history buffs, or love a good mix, here are some additional Ouray adventures to consider:

  • Via Ferratas

  • Rockhounding

  • Hiking

  • Soak in the Ouray Hot Springs

  • Jeep Tour

  • Visit the Vapor Caves

  • Take a Class at Ninazuma Pottery

  • Catch a show at The Wright Opera House

  • Gold Panning at the Bachelor Syracuse Mine

  • Horseback Riding

3. Intimate, Secluded Locations

Because Colorado is such a huge hot spot for adventurers, certain areas can feel congested, regardless of what activities you’re participating in. However, with a population of just 900 people, Ouray feels just like a small-town that gets a bit busier during peak-tourism season. But let’s be honest, the more you explore outside of the town, the less people you’ll have to compete with. Ouray offers plenty of hidden spots where you can exchange vows in total privacy—whether that’s a quiet alpine lake, a mountaintop, or a tucked-away meadow.

When our couples express their desire for privacy and a more secluded location for their nuptials, Chuck and I scout locations that fit exactly what our couples are envisioning. When we aren’t busy documenting love stories, we are also frequently hiking in the area and exploring all that the San Juans have to offer. The best way to find a secluded place to say “I do” is to enlist the help of your photographer and to research hikes. Odds are, if you’re eloping in Ouray, you probably love to be active. So don’t be afraid to hike to find the perfect location.

4. Iconic Jeep & Off-Road Trails

If by chance, hiking isn’t something that you and your partner enjoy doing, you might just find your perfect ceremony location while off-roading. Ouray is famous for its rugged 4x4 trails like Imogene Pass and Yankee Boy Basin. If you love adventure, you can ride or drive into some of the most jaw-dropping, remote wedding ceremony locations in Colorado.

There are several Jeep and OHV/ATV tours you can embark on. I highly recommend checking out visitouray.com/off-roading for the best, most up-to-date information. Spoiler alert: pets are allowed on several of these tours! Talk about a score. You are also allowed to bring your own OHV, Jeep, or ATV — but make sure to register your vehicle with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

5. Stunning Waterfalls

Imagine saying your vows in front of a rushing waterfall. Ouray is home to gems like Cascade Falls, Box Cañon Falls, and Bear Creek Falls (just to name a few)—perfect for couples who want a natural, dramatic backdrop. There are also numerous hidden waterfalls throughout the backcountry surrounding the Ouray area. However, the best way to find them is to get out and explore, contact the Ouray Visitors Center, or enlist the help of your elopement photographer. Something that Chuck and I love about Ouray is their commitment to conservation and protecting the area for future generations to enjoy.

If you are up for exploring even more of the San Juan Mountains, here are a few nearby waterfalls to add to your list:

  • Bridal Veil Falls (Telluride, CO)

  • Twin Falls Sneffel Creek (Ridgway, CO)

  • Ingram Falls (Telluride, CO)

6. Year-Round Beauty

  1. Summer in Ouray offers long sun-drenched mornings, followed by quick afternoon showers. Wildflowers are in full bloom and dot the lush green alpine meadows along the mountainsides.

  2. Fall in Ouray is transformative. There are golden aspens as far as the eye can see, and crisp mountain air fills the lungs. In especially high elevations in the San Juans, snow begins to creep, creating a magical contrast.

  3. Winter in Ouray features snow-covered peaks, ice climbers adventuring about, and couples cozying up in the hot springs to warm up after a chilly day.

  4. Spring in Ouray is the best time to catch the true magic of the area’s waterfalls. The snowmelt flowing into the waterfalls, budding wildflowers, and wildlife milling about makes getting married in Ouray in the Spring a magical time.

No matter what season you choose to elope in Ouray, you can’t go wrong. The San Juan Mountains offer a picture-perfect setting year-round.

7. Relaxing Hot Springs

If you’ve never had the chance to spend an afternoon hopping from hot spring to hot spring, there’s no better time than while celebrating your wedding. There are several different hot springs in the Ouray area to choose from, so you can find the best fit for you. Whether you plan on spending your Ouray, Colorado elopement hiking for miles on end or taking a Jeep tour, you and your honey will love nothing more than unwinding in the relaxing pools reflecting on your best day ever. To make your search a little bit easier, here’s a round up of where to relax in Ouray:

8. Charming Small-Town Vibes

Ouray is a historic mining town with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. You’ll find boutique hotels, cabins, and local restaurants that make your elopement feel both wild and comfortable. Main Street is lined with jewelry stores, gift shops, art studios, and more.

Finding a place to grab a bite or a fun drink in Ouray isn’t tough, either! From pastries at Artisan Bakery, a quick sandwich at Kami’s Samis, or pizza at Corkscrew Tavern Pizzeria, you will never go hungry.

9. Epic Photo Opportunities Everywhere

As much as Chuck and I love exploring the San Juan Mountains and capturing beautiful couples amongst breathtaking scenery, we love witnessing those couples discovering the area for their first time. There’s just something about seeing ‘old places’ through the eyes of someone else. The look of awe when we reach a vista that overlooks a sprawling valley below, or when we finally get to the bottom of a waterfall and get to gaze at the rushing waters.

Our biggest goal is to capture every moment of a couple’s love story so that they can remember exactly how it felt. We want our couples to have images that highlight not only their love, but the world around them. There is no shortage of beauty to discover in Ouray, and we love helping our couples experience every little bit of it.

10. Freedom to Create a Day That’s Yours

We are firm believers in crafting a wedding day that feels like you in every possible way. One of the most unique things about eloping in Colorado is the ability to self-solemnize — meaning you don’t need an officiant or witnesses to make your ceremony official. It’s just the two of you, your vows, and the mountains as your witnesses.

That sense of freedom is what makes eloping in Ouray so special. You can fill your day with experiences that truly resonate — maybe a morning hike together before exchanging vows at golden hour, or a picnic with your favorite foods overlooking the valley. Your elopement becomes a reflection of your relationship, not anyone else’s expectations.
